
Every single application, whether it is built for the web, for mobile devices, or computer can be monetized with Unlock! Memberships are an elegant way to restrict access to some content, features or even APIs. Today, we're excited to showcase the work of the [Novum Insights](https://novuminsights.com/) team who have shipped a integration of Unlock with [Firebase](https://firebase.google.com/)!

Firebase is a platform developed by Google for creating mobile and web applications. It is a framework which includes both server and client sides components for easy development and deployments.

David Layton, from the Novum Insights team built an integration between Unlock and Firebase.

## High level developer flow

The first step is to install the [NPM package](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@novuminsights/unlock-protocol-firebase) for the integration `@novum/unlock-firebase-integration`, then your application needs to authenticate its users by requesting users to sign a message. The backend will then **map** a Firebase Authentication user with their Ethereum wallet.

Finally, once the users are mapped to their wallet you can easily configure your application to behave differently based on which locks the users have unlocked!

You can define these using a configuration file `unlock-integration.config.json` which maps lock addresses to _roles_ like that:

Finally you can alter the behavior of your application on the front-end or backend using the `context.auth` object.

Someone I’ve known and admired for years, Amber is a UX expert, a Mozilla Fellow working on the future of money, and a powerful advocate of the open web. **Credit Card/Stripe support/Shopify Support**: [Announced last June](https://unlock-protocol.com/blog/credit-card-nft), your customers can now buy Unlock memberships and products with fiat cash/credit -- an important option to grow your revenue base. Amber will also help us perfect our Unlock plug-in for Shopify, the online store/brick and mortar payment system used by nearly 2 million businesses worldwide. Once completed, Unlock users will be able to make retail purchases via their crypto wallet!

**Discord integration**: [The Swordy Bot](https://unlock-protocol.com/blog/swordy-bot-intro) by community builder Patrick Gallagher limits access to select Discord servers to those who've bought a special Unlock-based NFT; a great way to help sustain a community on Discord.

**Decentraland and other games**: Unlock community member and grant recipient Henry recently made it simple for fellow Decentraland developers to [build memberships on their parcels](https://unlock-protocol.com/blog/decentraland). We think we’ll see many more game developers using Unlock to grant access to their content, to communities across the Internet. For example, an indie dev could set up a Discord server (see above) with member-only channels mapped to their games' memberships.

**WordPress**: As I learned during my time with Medium, it remains incredibly difficult to monetize journalism, creative writing and other content on the Internet without having to rely on intrusive advertising or third party donation/patronage platforms. Amber will help us improve the UX for our [plug-in for WordPress](https://wordpress-demo.unlock-protocol.com/) (the backbone to 1 in 3 websites), which will enable writers and other site hosts to easily create a content unlock for a subscription or micropayment -- with no third party taking a cut of their revenue.

**Musicians**: We love how Mexican artist Zplit uses Unlock to sell their music. When you [go to this page](https://zplit.online/xdai/), you need to purchase a key using Unlock Protocol to access the full version. Once it’s unlocked, the audio player will load the full track, and the artwork will start spinning. (This app runs using Metamask on the xDai Network.)

**Fundraising/Crowdfunding**: Unlock grantee Austin Robey recently concocted an amazing idea for a protocol utilization: a "[dinner dao](https://mmm.page/dinnerdao.mainv", i.e. a dinner club where memberships can be purchased through Unlock until enough funds are raised for the whole group to enjoy a special dinner. While this is a fun way for people to treat themselves to a fun and convivial night out, the very same process can be used to fundraise/crowdfund for an infinite variety of causes.

**Ticket sales**: Already used by the [Ethereum Community Conference](https://unlock-protocol.com/blog/ethcc-tickets) last July in Paris, other upcoming conferences (like [Liscon](https://liscon.org/!) are leveraging Unlock to sell tickets (via crypto or fiat) and manage attendees.

Jennifer is a co-founder of [Mintgate](https://www.mintgate.app/). She is building an integration that will allow their users to offer memberships through NFT tokens. Expanding the ability for creators to both control and monetize their content and communities will propel us all towards a decentralized web reality even faster!

## Kale Nixon -- Portland, OR

[Kale is a musician](https://www.leisureaudio.org/), producer and performer who will integrate Unlock with the various aspects of their online presence and create examples of how Unlock can support creators, musicians and, more. Kale’s project supports further Unlock integrations for the creator economy but also focuses on educating the creator community. As noted in Kale’s proposal, many of their community members might not have developer skills, but are actively seeking solutions for decentralizing their creations.

## Marty Bell -- Global

Marty is integrating Unlock with his existing music streaming platform. [Poolsuite](https://poolsuite.net/) currently provides listening sessions to over one million users a year with an average of 750,000 unique visitors from around the globe. Marty’s Unlock integration will help elevate the features he already provides by leveraging the utility aspect of our NFTs. He’s hoping to provide VIP perks and special incentives to his community members using Unlock Protocol.

The past 18 months have proven that "real life" is also very much happening online. The **metaverse** has been taking a significantly bigger place in our lives! Among all platforms, [Decentraland](https://decentraland.org/) is one built on top of the Ethereum network. For example, [the parcels are NFT](https://opensea.io/assets/decentraland).

When we started our grants program a few months ago, one of our community members, [Henry](http://www.henryhoffman.com/), reached out. He's a gaming expert and wanted to showcase what it would mean to build a private club in Decentraland. His grant application was approved, and today, we're very excited to show his work: he made it simple for developers to build memberships on their parcels.

We really love this integration because it shows how versatile the protocol is: memberships are everyone, and the Unlock Protocol makes it easy to deploy them for creators!

## Building your own!

Henry went as far as [creating a 2nd scene](https://github.com/thehen/unlock-decentraland-example-project) that developers can use as a reference implementation. Let's review the code and see how you, a developer, can add a lock to a scene where users are allowed to move!

The first step is to install a npm module to your project.

Then, you need to configure Unlock with the following command (make sure you replace the lock address!).

After this, you're ready to handle events and trigger things. In this demo, the door migt be open or closed, based on events triggered in the scene

## Unlocking games!

In a game, a membership can let the user access specific private spaces, like a saloon, a concert, a lecture… etc, but they can also let users unlock features or particular features.

We're really excited to see what developers can build on top of this integration! And one that we're interested in beyond this is the idea that a single membership can be used by multiple games or even entirely outside of games. For example, someone could set up a Discord server that uses the same membership and create member-only channels mapped to the games' memberships!

The past 18 months have proven that "real life" is also very much happening online. The metaverse has been taking a significantly bigger place in our lives! Among all platforms, <a href="https://decentraland.org/">Decentraland</a> is one built on top of the Ethereum network. For example, <a href="https://opensea.io/assets/decentraland">the parcels are NFT</a>.
When we started our grants program a few months ago, one of our community members, <a href="http://www.henryhoffman.com/">Henry</a>, reached out. He's a gaming expert and wanted to showcase what it would mean to build a private club in Decentraland. His grant application was approved, and today, we're very excited to show his work: he made it simple for developers to build memberships on their parcels.

Henry went as far as <a href="https://github.com/thehen/unlock-decentraland-example-project">creating a 2nd scene</a> that developers can use as a reference implementation. Let's review the code and see how you, a developer, can add a lock to a scene where users are allowed to move!
The first step is to install a npm module to your project.

Unlock memberships are Non-Fungible Tokens! We use the ERC-721 specification, exactly like [Cryptopunks](https://www.larvalabs.com/cryptopunks) or Beeples [first 5000 days](https://makersplace.com/beeple/5000-days/). This means that, exactly like any other NFT, Unlock memberships have an image, which can be customized by the lock's creator!

From the beginning we chose a fully open approach where creators deploy their own ERC-721 contract, which we call a lock, rather than use one that we control/own. Of course, the contracts are [open source](https://github.com/unlock-protocol/unlock/), and [verified on block explorers](https://etherscan.io/address/0x46f45e30239219045ed5b67891fea446bc3daa4f#code) so that creators both have full transparency and full control.

From there, a creator can customize the famous metadata URL to be anything they want and build very custom NFT for each of their members.

Now, we also know that many creators don't have the resources to hire a developer to customize things for them, so today, we made it really easy for all lock creators to [customize their NFT memberships](https://unlock-protocol.com/guides/customize-nft-image/)!

On the dashboard, click on the lock icon, and opens a modal where you can easily customize the image used on the NFT.

After this, you can easily customize the image by uploading one of your choice, or add an external URL if the image is hosted somewhere else, like IPFS for example!

Unlock has been deployed to Polygon! As Ethereum's main net is increasingly crowded, we wanted to give the ability to creators to deploy their locks and memberships on other networks, such as [Polygon](https://polygon.technology/).

Polygon is an EVM-compatible blockchain that runs on proof-of-stake and offers much cheaper transaction costs. For example, it currently costs about $0.0003 to purchase a membership on a lock deployed on Polygon (another way to look at this is that it would require you to buy about 33 different memberships to spend $0.01 in fees!)

Our goal for Unlock is to be available on _every_ EVM compatible environment, with a **core** on the mainnet, where governance and UDT minting happens. You can already use the Ethereum main net, as well as the [xDAI chain](/blog/xdai).

We're also very proud to say that, we wanted to allow our community to vote on this important step even though this was on our original roadmap. Deploying on Polygon was the [very first proposal](https://snapshot.org/#/unlock-protocol.eth/proposal/QmR8s9jvvJ82Mx8Ub1J5ESWFadwjjKtRpGs3vmCHbsqWUi) that we published on snapshots where all UDT holders could vote. Given the solid positive signal, we went ahead and deployed Unlock on Polygon.

## Getting started

Once your wallet is configured for Polygon, [head over to your dashboard](https://app.unlock-protocol.com/dashboard) to deploy your first lock. Like always, you can set your own price, duration and the maximum number of members! You can also use any ERC20 as you would do on Ethereum's mainnet. You can also enable credit card payments on these locks for users who do not have a crypto wallet or do not have Matic tokens in their wallets.

All of our front-end applications, and our credit card gateway are operational for Polygon! You should be able to just use them transparently as long as you configure them accordingly.

## Earning UDT on Polygon

We want Unlock to belong to its users and let users govern the protocol. For this, a few months ago, we introduced the UDT tokens. New tokens are minted when users purchase new memberships. However, until now, it was only possible to do it on Ethereum's mainnet. We are proud to say that we found a way to distribute UDT from side-chains and that these are now happening on both xDAI and Polygon!

The process is simple: instead of minting from the main chain, we have taken about 30,000 tokens (about 3%) from our treasury and assigned them to the respective Unlock contracts on both Polygon and xDAI so that these contracts can distribute them.

What's important to realize is that tokens are **only distributed when the protocol is used**. Additionally the amount of tokens minted is capped by gas spent. We're very excited to see what will happen with Eth2.0, but we're also convinced that the future of Ethereum is multi-chain, multi-L2 and we're committed to making sure that each has its own UDT reward system, as we want Unlock to grow everywhere!

Deploying on Polygon was the <a href="https://snapshot.org/#/unlock-protocol.eth/proposal/QmR8s9jvvJ82Mx8Ub1J5ESWFadwjjKtRpGs3vmCHbsqWUi">very first proposal</a> that we published on snapshots where all UDT holders could vote. Given the solid positive signal, we went ahead and deployed Unlock on Polygon.
<h2>Getting started</h2>
Once your wallet is configured for Polygon, <a href="https://app.unlock-protocol.com/dashboard">head over to your dashboard</a> to deploy your first lock. Like always, you can set your own price, duration and the maximum number of members! You can also use any ERC20 as you would do on Ethereum's mainnet. You can also enable credit card payments on these locks for users who do not have a crypto wallet or do not have Matic tokens in their wallets.

All of our front-end applications, and our credit card gateway are operational for Polygon! You should be able to just use them transparently as long as you configure them accordingly.

<h2>Earning UDT on Polygon</h2>
We want Unlock to belong to its users and let users govern the protocol. For this, a few months ago, we introduced the UDT tokens. New tokens are minted when users purchase new memberships. However, until now, it was only possible to do it on Ethereum's mainnet. We are proud to say that we found a way to distribute UDT from side-chains and that these are now happening on both xDAI and Polygon!
The process is simple: instead of minting from the main chain, we have taken about 30,000 tokens (about 3%) from our treasury and assigned them to the respective Unlock contracts on both Polygon and xDAI so that these contracts can distribute them.
What's important to realize is that tokens are only distributed when the protocol is used. Additionally the amount of tokens minted is capped by gas spent. We're very excited to see what will happen with Eth2.0, but we're also convinced that the future of Ethereum is multi-chain, multi-L2 and we're committed to making sure that each has its own UDT reward system, as we want Unlock to grow everywhere!
